Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Phosphate Peaks & Pacific Views

Yaren District & Central Plateau
Arrive in Nauru, explore the administrative heart of Yaren, and venture into the otherworldly interior of the Topside phosphate fields.
Morning
Arrival and Yaren District Orientation
After clearing immigration at Nauru International Airport, get settled and head to Yaren District. Visit the Parliament House (Nauru Parliament) for a photo, see the remnants of the WWII Japanese guns at Command Ridge, and take in the sweeping ocean views. This is a gentle introduction to the island's compact scale and layered history.
2-3 hours $0 (self-guided)
Lunch
J's Restaurant
Mixed (Chinese, Western, local seafood) Mid-range
Afternoon
Explore the Topside (Central Plateau)
Hire a local guide or driver to navigate the rough tracks of the mined interior. Witness the surreal, jagged coral pinnacles left behind after phosphate extraction. Key stops include Moqua Well, a small freshwater cave, and the vast, silent expanse of the phosphate fields. The landscape is hauntingly beautiful and tells the story of Nauru's economic rise and fall.
3-4 hours $40-60 (for guide/driver)
Arrange a driver/guide through your hotel or guesthouse upon arrival; formal tour operators are scarce.
Evening
Sunset Dinner
Enjoy a casual dinner at your hotel or at Capelle & Partner, the island's largest store, which has a popular eatery. The menu often features fresh tuna.

Where to Stay Tonight

Aiwo or Meneng District (Od'n Aiwo Hotel or Menen Hotel)

These are the primary hotels on the island, offering basic but reliable accommodation. Aiwo is closer to the port and some historical sites, while Menen is near the eastern coast.

Carry plenty of cash (Australian dollars). ATMs are unreliable, and credit cards are rarely accepted outside the major hotels.
Day 1 Budget: $150
2

Coastal Serenity & Cultural Touchstones

Anibare Bay & Buada District
Experience Nauru's natural beauty with a morning at its best beach, followed by a glimpse into local life and culture.
Morning
Anibare Bay Swim & Relaxation
Head to Anibare Bay, Nauru's most scenic beach with a long sweep of sand and dramatic boulders. The bay is partially protected by a breakwater, making it one of the safer swimming spots. Relax, take photos of the fishing boats, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The Anibare Harbour is a focal point of local activity.
2-3 hours $0
Lunch
Anibare Village or hotel picnic
Simple local fare or packed lunch Budget
Afternoon
Buada Lagoon & Cultural Sites
Visit the inland, brackish Buada Lagoon, a lush contrast to the coastal landscape. While swimming is not advised, it's a serene spot. Afterwards, visit the small but informative Nauru Museum (check opening hours) or the Nauru Police Museum to see WWII artifacts. Drive past the iconic 'Nauru' sign for a classic souvenir photo.
2-3 hours $5-10 (museum donation)
The museums may require asking at the police station or government offices to be opened; be politely persistent.
Evening
Farewell Dinner
Return to J's Restaurant or try the dining option at your hotel for a final meal, often featuring the catch of the day.

Where to Stay Tonight

Same as previous night (Od'n Aiwo Hotel or Menen Hotel)

Staying in the same place simplifies logistics for a short trip, and options are extremely limited.

If you see a local selling fresh tuna or other fish by the roadside in Anibare, consider buying some. Your hotel kitchen may be willing to cook it for you for a small fee.
Day 2 Budget: $120

Practical Information

Getting Around

The only practical way to explore Nauru is by hiring a car (available from Capelle & Partner or hotels) or a driver/guide. Taxis exist but are not always readily available on demand. Roads are generally good on the coastal ring road, but tracks inland are rough. Driving is on the left.

Book Ahead

Accommodation and flights must be booked well in advance due to limited capacity. Visa approval is required before travel (apply through Nauru's diplomatic missions).

Packing Essentials

Sturdy walking shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, swimwear, towel, Australian dollars in cash, power adapter (Type I), reusable water bottle (tap water is desalinated but often bottled is preferred).

Total Budget

$270-300 (excluding international flights and visas)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Save by sharing a hired car/driver with other travelers, self-catering with groceries from Capelle & Partner, and skipping guided tours for independent exploration of accessible coastal sights like Anibare Bay and Command Ridge.

Luxury Upgrade

Upgrade is relative in Nauru. It involves securing the best room at the Menen Hotel (sea-view suite), hiring a private car and guide for the full duration, and arranging special seafood dinners. The luxury is in having dedicated, flexible service.

Family-Friendly

Focus on safe, accessible activities: swimming at Anibare Bay, visiting the WWII guns (which kids find interesting), and a short drive through Topside. Pack ample snacks, games, and sun protection. The slow pace and lack of crowds can be a plus for families.
