Nauru Entry Requirements

Nauru Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling, as Nauru's entry requirements can change with limited notice.
Nauru, the world's smallest island nation located in Micronesia, has specific entry requirements that all travelers must meet before arrival. As a remote Pacific island destination with limited international connections, proper preparation is essential. Most visitors arrive via Nauru Airlines from Brisbane, Australia, or other Pacific island nations, and the country maintains careful control over who enters its borders. All travelers to Nauru must obtain a visa prior to arrival, regardless of nationality. There is no visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival option available. The visa application process requires sponsorship from either a Nauruan citizen, resident, or registered business entity in Nauru. This unique requirement means that casual tourism is limited, and most visitors travel for business, government work, or to visit family and friends. The immigration process at Nauru International Airport is relatively straightforward but thorough. Given the small size of the country and limited flight connections, immigration officers carefully verify all documentation. Travelers should ensure they have all required documents readily accessible, including their approved visa, valid passport, onward/return tickets, and proof of accommodation. Processing times can vary depending on flight arrival schedules, so patience and preparation are key to a smooth entry experience.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Nauru requires all foreign nationals to obtain a visa before travel. Unlike many countries, Nauru does not offer visa-free entry to any nationality, nor does it provide visa-on-arrival services. All visa applications must be submitted and approved in advance of travel.

Travelers should monitor official sources for any future implementation of electronic visa systems.

Visa Required
Typically 30 days for tourist/visitor visas, though duration varies based on purpose of visit

All foreign nationals must obtain a visa prior to arrival, with sponsorship from a Nauruan citizen, resident, or registered business

How to Apply: Applications must be submitted to the Nauru Department of Immigration with required documentation including passport copy, completed application form, sponsor details, return flight tickets, and proof of accommodation. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks but can take longer. Applications should be submitted well in advance of intended travel dates.

Sponsorship requirement is mandatory. Tourist visas are less common than business or family visit visas. Visa fees vary depending on nationality and purpose of visit, typically ranging from AUD $50-200. Extensions may be possible but must be arranged through the Department of Immigration while in Nauru.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Nauru International Airport, travelers will proceed through immigration and customs. The airport is small, and processing is generally efficient, though thorough. All passengers on arriving flights are processed together, so timing depends on flight capacity.

1
Disembarkation
Exit the aircraft and proceed to the terminal building. Follow signs to immigration. The airport is small with a single terminal, making navigation straightforward.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, approved visa, completed arrival card (typically distributed on the flight), and return/onward ticket to the immigration officer. Officers may ask questions about your visit purpose, accommodation, and sponsor details.
3
Document Verification
Immigration officers will verify your visa approval, check passport validity (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay), and confirm your travel arrangements. This process is thorough given Nauru's strict entry requirements.
4
Baggage Claim
Collect your luggage from the baggage claim area. Given the small number of flights, baggage is typically available quickly.
5
Customs Declaration
Complete customs formalities by declaring any restricted items, currency over the threshold, or goods exceeding duty-free allowances. Customs officers may inspect luggage.
6
Exit and Transport
Exit the arrivals area where your sponsor, hotel representative, or arranged transportation should be waiting. Public transportation is limited, so pre-arranged pickup is recommended.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Nauru. Should have at least one blank page for entry stamp.
Approved Visa
Printed copy of your visa approval from the Nauru Department of Immigration. Electronic copies may not be sufficient.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof of departure from Nauru is mandatory. Given limited flight options, this should be confirmed before arrival.
Accommodation Confirmation
Hotel booking confirmation or letter from sponsor confirming your accommodation arrangements in Nauru.
Sponsor Information
Contact details and documentation from your Nauruan sponsor, as you may be asked to verify this information.
Sufficient Funds
Evidence of adequate financial means to support yourself during your stay (bank statements, cash, credit cards).
Completed Arrival Card
Immigration arrival card, typically provided on the flight or at immigration. Complete accurately and legibly.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Apply for your visa well in advance (at least 4-6 weeks before travel) as processing times can be lengthy and flights are infrequent.
Keep all visa documentation and sponsor information easily accessible in your carry-on luggage, not in checked baggage.
Print multiple copies of important documents (visa approval, flight tickets, accommodation confirmation) as a backup.
Be prepared to explain your visit in detail, including your relationship with your sponsor and your planned activities.
Arrive at the airport with patience, as processing can take time depending on the number of passengers on your flight.
Have your sponsor's contact information readily available, as immigration may wish to verify details.
Ensure you have Australian dollars (AUD), as this is the official currency. ATM and banking facilities are limited.
Arrange transportation from the airport in advance, as taxi services are limited and may not always be available.

Customs & Duty-Free

Nauru customs regulations are designed to protect the island's biosecurity and control the importation of restricted goods. All arriving passengers must complete a customs declaration form and may be subject to baggage inspection. Given Nauru's small size and isolation, biosecurity is taken seriously.

Alcohol
2 liters of spirits or wine per adult
Must be 21 years or older. Alcohol in excess of this allowance is subject to duty and may require a permit.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco products per adult
Must be 21 years or older. Excess quantities are subject to duty.
Currency
Amounts over AUD $10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared
Both incoming and outgoing currency declarations required above this threshold. Failure to declare may result in confiscation and penalties.
Gifts/Goods
Personal effects and gifts up to AUD $400 in value
Goods exceeding this value may be subject to customs duty. Commercial quantities are not permitted under tourist provisions.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics - strictly prohibited with severe penalties including imprisonment
  • Firearms, ammunition, and explosives - require special permits that are rarely granted to visitors
  • Pornographic materials - prohibited under Nauruan law
  • Counterfeit goods - including fake currency, pirated media, and counterfeit products
  • Certain plants and plant materials - to protect biosecurity
  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods - biosecurity risk
  • Meat and dairy products - unless properly declared and approved
  • Endangered species products - including ivory, certain shells, and protected wildlife items
  • Weapons including knives (except small pocket knives), martial arts equipment, and pepper spray

Restricted Items

  • Prescription medications - must be accompanied by prescription or doctor's letter, should be in original packaging with your name on it. Bring only quantities reasonable for your stay
  • Live animals and pets - require import permits, quarantine arrangements, and health certificates obtained well in advance (see special situations section)
  • Drones and radio equipment - may require permits from relevant authorities
  • Professional camera and video equipment - may require declaration and temporary import documentation for commercial purposes
  • Food items - certain packaged, processed foods may be permitted but must be declared; homemade foods are generally not allowed
  • Seeds and propagating materials - require phytosanitary certificates and import permits
  • Alcohol and tobacco exceeding duty-free limits - subject to duty and may require permits for large quantities

Health Requirements

Nauru has specific health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the introduction of communicable diseases to the island. Health requirements can change based on global health situations, so checking current requirements before travel is essential.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - certificate required if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country (valid certificate must show vaccination at least 10 days before arrival)
  • COVID-19 - requirements vary based on current health situation; check latest requirements before travel as policies may include vaccination proof, testing, or other measures

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations - ensure MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), and polio vaccinations are up to date
  • Hepatitis A - recommended for all travelers due to potential food and water contamination risks
  • Hepatitis B - recommended for travelers who may have contact with blood or body fluids, or extended stays
  • Typhoid - recommended for travelers eating outside of major hotels and restaurants
  • Influenza - recommended, especially during flu season

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Nauru has limited medical facilities, and serious medical conditions require evacuation to Australia or other countries with advanced medical care. Ensure your insurance covers medical evacuation, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers for your insurance provider.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements, particularly regarding COVID-19 and other emerging diseases, can change rapidly. Check with the Nauru Department of Health or your nearest Nauruan diplomatic mission 2-3 weeks before travel and again within 72 hours of departure. Requirements may include pre-departure testing, vaccination certificates, health declarations, quarantine periods, or post-arrival testing. Keep digital and printed copies of all health certificates and test results.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children require the same visa and entry documentation as adults, including sponsorship. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) authorizing the travel, including contact information. If traveling with only one parent, bring the child's birth certificate and consent letter from the other parent. In cases of sole custody, bring legal documentation. Children must have their own passport (included on parent's passport is not acceptable). Ensure children's vaccinations are current, particularly routine childhood immunizations.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Nauru is extremely difficult and subject to strict quarantine regulations. An import permit must be obtained from the Nauru Department of Commerce, Industry and Environment well in advance (minimum 3-6 months). Requirements include: current rabies vaccination (at least 30 days old but not more than 12 months), microchip identification, health certificate from a licensed veterinarian issued within 10 days of travel, proof of treatment for internal and external parasites, and potentially lengthy quarantine period upon arrival at owner's expense. Only dogs and cats are generally considered; other animals face additional restrictions. Given the complexity and costs, leaving pets at home or in care is strongly recommended for short visits. Contact authorities at least 6 months before intended travel if pet importation is necessary.

Extended Stays

Tourist/visitor visas are typically issued for 30 days. Extensions may be possible but are not guaranteed and must be applied for at the Department of Immigration before your current visa expires. Extension applications require: valid reason for extension, continued sponsorship, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation confirmation, and payment of extension fees. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration authorities. For stays longer than 90 days or for work purposes, different visa categories apply (work permits, business visas, residence permits) which require separate applications and approvals. Work permits require employer sponsorship and approval from the Department of Commerce, Industry and Environment. Long-term residence requires special approval and is rarely granted except for employment, investment, or family reunification purposes. Plan your stay within your approved visa period, as overstaying can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travelers

Business visitors require a business visa with sponsorship from a registered Nauruan business entity. Application must include: letter of invitation from Nauruan business partner detailing purpose and duration of visit, company registration documents from sponsor, proof of business relationship, and detailed itinerary. Business visas may be issued for single or multiple entries depending on need. If conducting business activities, ensure proper work authorization if required. Attending meetings or conferences typically falls under business visitor category, but any work that generates income in Nauru requires a work permit. Processing times for business visas are similar to tourist visas (2-4 weeks), so apply early.

Transit Passengers

Even transit passengers who do not leave the airport may require transit visas depending on nationality and length of layover. Given Nauru's limited flight connections, most travelers are not in pure transit but are either arriving or departing. If you have a layover and plan to leave the airport, you will need a full entry visa. If remaining airside during a brief connection (rare given flight schedules), confirm with Nauru Airlines and immigration authorities whether a transit visa is required. It is safest to assume you will need proper entry authorization for any stop in Nauru.

Journalists and Media

Journalists, photographers, and media professionals must obtain special permission and appropriate visas before traveling to Nauru. Media visas require approval from the Nauru Government and sponsorship from relevant authorities. Application must include: detailed explanation of reporting purpose, list of equipment being brought, itinerary, and credentials from media organization. Nauru has been sensitive about media access in the past, particularly regarding the Regional Processing Centre. Applications should be submitted well in advance (2-3 months minimum) and approval is not guaranteed. Arriving as a tourist while intending to conduct journalism activities is prohibited and can result in deportation. Professional camera equipment may be subject to additional scrutiny at customs.
